Miss Stephanie Gabriela Lopez (2014)
Hometown & State: Fresno, CA
Universities attended: California State University, Fresno
Degree & Subject at Cambridge: MPhil Latin American Studies
New scholar profile:
I was born and raised in California and hail from a big Salvadoran family. My research interests include social movement theory, democratization and citizenship especially as they pertain to Latin America and the Middle East. As an undergraduate student at California State University, Fresno, majoring in political science and mass communication and journalism, I conducted research centered on indigenous social movements in Latin America and published a number of articles in local newspapers. My goal with each article was to accurately present the subject matter, while at the same time generating a reaction from the reader because I strongly feel that simply being informed about the social ills that plague our societies is not enough. I believe one of the greatest goals in life is to actively work toward bettering society, whether through education, volunteer work, research or other nonviolent means. I understand the transformative power of education, not only from personal experience, but also from the experience of being a teacher and mentor to youth and children at the local community church where I volunteered. One of the greatest lessons I learned while teaching and mentoring students is that the role of a leader is not to lecture and order but rather to empower, guide and defend. And it is with an open mind and in this same spirit that I hope to pursue an MPhil in Latin American Studies at Cambridge. I believe studying at Cambridge will set an ideal foundation for me to accomplish my career objective of becoming a university professor and researcher and my life objective of being a bridge between people, ideas, information, and government. I feel honored and blessed to have been chosen as a 2014 Gates Cambridge Scholar and look forward to embarking on this new journey. Interests: Learning languages, writing, cooking, reading novels, admiring art, visiting museums, and travelling.
