This website is run by the Gates Cambridge Trust and this accessibility statement applies to www.gatescambridge.org.

We want as many people as possible to be able to use this website. For example, that means you should be able to:

• change colours, contrast levels and fonts
• zoom in up to 300% without the text spilling off the screen
• navigate most of the website using just a keyboard

• listen to most of the website using a screen reader

The Public Sector Bodies (Websites and Mobile Applications) (No 2) Accessibility Regulations 2018 (the ‘accessibility regulations’) do not apply to the Gates Cambridge Trust. However, we are committed to making our website and mobile applications accessible and in this regard to complying voluntarily with the accessibility regulations. This accessibility statement is published in that context.

This website is partially compliant with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines version 2.1 AA standard, due to the following non-compliances.

Non-compliance with the accessibility regulations

Many images do not have a text alternative, so people using a screen reader cannot access the information. This fails WCAG 2.1 success criterion 1.1.1 (non-text content).

Some video and audio files on our site do not have audio description, transcripts or captions. This fails WCAG 2.1 success criteria:

• 1.2.2 (captions pre-recorded)
• 1.2.3 (audio description or text alternative)
• 1.2.4 (captions live)

The hierarchy of some page headings is incorrect. This means that information may be presented in the wrong order to people using assistive technology. This fails WCAG 2.1 success criterion 1.3.2 (Meaningful sequence).

Some text, links – including footer links – and buttons have poor colour contrast. This fails WCAG2.1 success criterion 1.4.3 (Contrast – minimum)

Some URL link text does not describe its purpose or destination. This means that it is not always clear where a link will take the user. This fails WCAG2.1 success criterion 2.4.4 (Link purpose)

There are also various other accessibility issues that we are aware of and are working on, including adding a sitemap and plugin and adding a label to search forms. Other issues include:

• Increasing social media icon size
• Making the main navigation keyboard navigable
• More meaningful page titles
• Disallowing empty search
• Flipping the colours on the impact map on the home page for better contrast

What we’re doing to improve accessibility

We’re working to fix the issues identified in this accessibility statement and aim to fix these during 2026.

We are looking to redesign our website in the near future and are making accessibility changes in the meantime.

Gates Cambridge has listed most of the known accessibility issues in this statement and is currently working to address them.

This statement was last reviewed on 14 July 2026 and will be regularly reviewed every six months.
