Anna Malaika Tubbs

A Gates Cambridge Scholar is publishing her second book in May after her first became a New York Times best-seller.

Anna Malaika Tubbs’ new book, Erased: What American Patriarchy Has Hidden from Us, is published on 20th May in the US. It is described as “the story of the United States from a new perspective: one where the people who shaped this country – who have been oppressed and whose contributions have been denied – are at the centre, reminding us that we can restore what has been strategically kept from us”.

Alicia Garza, civil rights activist and co-founder of the Black Lives Matter movement, calls it “a primer for understanding the way and why of patriarchy that couldn’t be more on time”, while Tarana Burke, activist, author and founder of the Me Too movement, says: “With Erased, Anna Malaika Tubbs offers a visionary and clear-eyed understanding of patriarchy that goes beyond the incomplete definitions that many of us have grown to accept as fact. This book is not a simplistic story of men vs. women; it’s about the full complexity of our lives and our futures.”

Anna Malaika’s first book, The Three Mothers, based on her PhD, celebrates Black motherhood by telling the story of the three women who raised and shaped some of America’s most well-known figures: Martin Luther King Jr, Malcolm X and James Baldwin. The 2021 book achieved critical acclaim and has been featured in Oprah Daily, People Magazine, USA Today, The Skimm, Fortune Magazine, MSNBC, CBS, C-Span, NPR, Forbes, The 19th News, GMA.com, Yahoo News, The Washington Post, Southern Living Magazine and more.

Anna Malaika [2017] has also published articles on topics ranging from celebrating motherhood to addressing the forced sterilisation of Black women as well as the importance of feminism, intersectionality and inclusivity. Her writing has been featured in TIME Magazine, New York Magazine, CNN, Motherly, the Huffington Post, For Harriet, The Guardian, Darling Magazine and Blavity.

She told San Francisco Magazine:  “My career goal has been to produce work that takes academic discourse and makes it accessible to everyone, especially when it comes to theory concerning women of colour…”
