Dr Krishnan Subrahmanian is elected to the Minnesota state senate with over 62% of the vote.
Gates Cambridge Scholar Dr Krishnan Subrahmanian has been elected to the Minnesota state senate this week.
Krishnan [2006], who describes himself as “a father, son, husband, educator, public health leader, veteran, pediatrician, and lifelong frustrated Minnesota sports fan”, won the Senate District 49 seat, succeeding Steve Cwodzinski, also a member of the Minnesota Democratic–Farmer–Labour Party, who was first elected in 2016 and chose not to seek another term.
According to the Minnesota Secretary of State’s website, Krishnan won 62.63% of the vote.
He did his undergraduate studies in Social Studies at Harvard, an MPhil in Education at Cambridge where he was a Gates Cambridge Scholar and his MD at Stanford, funded by a Paul & Daisy Soros Fellowship.
While at Harvard, he taught and then directed City Step, a programme to empower children through the medium of dance. He also founded and directed the Cambridge Student Partnership, a student organisation that connected needy Cambridge and Boston residents to community resources available to serve them.
As an undergraduate Krishnan also served as a counsellor and theatre instructor at the Hole in the Wall Gang camp in Connecticut for children battling life-threatening diseases. That experience led to his being awarded a year-long Richardson Fellowship in Public Affairs, which he used to initiate a camp in South Africa for orphans and children suffering from HIV/AIDS. After returning from South Africa, Krishnan joined Teach for America, under whose auspices he taught special needs high school students on the Rosebud Indian Reservation in South Dakota. He was also Border State Director of Obama for America and advocated for early Affordable Care Act legislation.
After completing medical training, Krishnan was Chief Resident at Baylor College of Medicine where he worked at Texas Children’s Hospital and on the Baylor College of Medicine Global Child Health programme. From 2016 Krishnan has been working as a paediatrician across Hennepin County and is now Chief Medical Officer at Hennepin Health. He is also a Flight Surgeon and Physician in the Air National Guard.
He stood on a platform of being a champion for young people and families, an advocate for good governance and a defender of democracy and rights. Another Gates Cambridge Scholar Greg Nance was re-elected as a state representative in Washington State in the state elections that ran alongside the Senate and House of Representative midterms this week.
